  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Vassilios Damiras -- Wild Wild West : This book deals with the evolution of the Wild West in the USA. It examines and analyzes how the people moved to the west to settle. During that process, Native Americans needed to push out and colonized, especially after the Civil War. It was challenging to move to the west, settle and deal with the Indians. During that period of demanding times, the U.S. Army provided protection and security. This book articulate present these dramatic moments of American history. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mike -- Great historical piece. Well told and enjoyable to read. : This book could be used in a High school classroom. Well written and paints a believable picture of early America. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from new beginnings -- Didn't love it-3.5 rounded up : As always with CH books, they are well researched and worth reading; however, this one felt off after the first few chapters. The book opens fairly well with a brief history of the migration and distribution of the Native American peoples on this continent. I suspect some of this section will hold new and surprising information for some readers....like the Plains Tribes didn't exist as we think of them today until after the Spanish introduced the horse to the Americas. The details in the next section on the Spanish/Mexican exploration and exploitations was new and interesting to me. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Michael States -- We are rough men... : Such begins Captivating History's three hour read of the Wild West. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Val A. Balagot -- More 'Wild', more 'West', all in one volume : When I was a lad I lapped up the Hollywood versions of the Wild West saga. I was enthralled by the rough-and-tumble personalities of the period, such as Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, Will Bill Hickok and the like. It was such an awakening to have those myths dispelled by sources such as this book. This volume begins by recounting the tribes that populated the American West, and the subsequent attempts by the European nations such as Spain, England and France, each of which tried to carve out a piece of the West for their own purposes. The common thread is that the indigenous tribes had their livelihoods uprooted by the cross, the sword or disease. Explorers like Lewis & Clark and those that followed opened up the West, and influenced the population movement away from the increasingly-crowded East Coast. As always, the opening of the West attracted colourful characters to put their personal stamp on this historical era. This book has a handful of maps and period photographs, which help visualize the events surrounding this important historical period. It's worth the read. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from anna c. -- Fascinating history! : I have lived in the western U.S. almost all my life and have visited so many of the places that were mentioned in this book. I attended the 150th Anniversary of the Trans-Continental Railroad in Columbia, Ca. in May 2019 and taken road trips from Northern California (along the Camino Real), Oregon, Nevada, AZ, NM, OK, TX, AR. I wish I had read this book then. It makes the Wild West come alive. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mark -- A very informative read : I like that this book comprised many aspects of the Old Wild West era, from Outlaws to Sheriffs and Indians to the great gold rushes that occurred and the changing attitudes towards the Native American people who lost much of their land, rights and lives due to the people who settled there. You learn how the Wild West has wrongly been romanticised over the years and have to admire some of the skills the people of this time had to become legends in history. I thoroughly enjoyed these stories. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 10, 2021 )
